Sliding Crash Gate
Last year ECI furnished and installed a new cantilever sliding crash gate (pictured above) at the exit lane for a data center in the greater Chicagoland area. You can faintly make out the pavement marks for a vehicle detector loop in the foreground. A close-up view of the traffic light (to help manage vehicle traffic) on a pole and the operator are shown below. Also note the dual photo-electric beams on the beam to the left of the traffic light pole.

In general sliding crash gates play a crucial role in protecting sensitive sites from unauthorized vehicle access or egress. These gates provide a physical obstacle against assailants who may pose serious security threats. They can withstand high-impact collisions from vehicles attempting forced entry. Gates are available in different ratings to withstand various levels of impact force.
Security personnel can carefully manage and monitor all vehicle traffic entering and exiting the site while maintaining a secure perimeter. Even the mere presence of a formidable sliding crash gate sends a clear message to discourage potential intruders, including terrorists, from attempting to breach the site’s security.
These gates can easily be integrated with access control systems, cameras, alarms, etc. In emergency situations, they can be quickly closed to seal off the site. As a safety feature, the gates are installed with photo-electric beams (as shown above) that detect if something is in the way, so they won’t accidentally close on a car or person.
Applications include sensitive sites such as government facilities, military installations, power plants, airports, data centers or critical infrastructure. According to Data Center Journal, Illinois is home to at least “53 data centers, run by 31 organizations.” Of these, 34 are in the greater Chicagoland area, with more on the way.
