Just two days ago, on Sunday, August 9th, I was alerted to about another low-speed vehicle crash in this area. The driver lost control of a vehicle and smashed into a building as reported above by Wheeling Fire Department Battalion Chief Mark Menzel.

The unidentified driver was pinned in the extensive wreckage (just look at the above video to view), cut out of the SUV by firefighters and transported to a nearby hospital. A passenger was unharmed.

The incident took place at a residence located at Kolssak Funeral Home Ltd., 189 South Milwaukee Avenue in Wheeling. The building also suffered major damage but no one in the building was injured.

I’ve written about incidents such as this many times before on this blog. The most recent was less than two months ago: “Low Speed Vehicular Crashes Again Make The News Headlines“.

At that time I mentioned several other incidents –

  • An SUV backed into a Schaumburg jewelry store.
  • The owner and a customer were in a suburban pawn shop when a car smashed through the front window.
  • A crash in Australia injured 12 when an SUV crashed into a clothing store.

Yes, these types of crashes happen infrequently. And you may be asking yourself – what are the chances that it will ever happen to me? Please remember that in addition to property damage, these types of low-speed vehicular crashes injure people and at times may even result in fatalities.

So, we ask that you review the traffic pattern in front of your establishment. What speeds do vehicles travel as they approach your location. Is an assessment long overdue?

Learn how perimeter security bollards can protect you and your patrons from injury caused by low-speed vehicular crashes. Your place of business may also be thus protected against extensive damage without resulting in interruption of your normal business. This is of special concern in these challenging times.
