Pipe Gates at Waukegan National Airport

Pipe Gates at Waukegan National Airport

ECI was recently called to the Waukegan (IL) National Airport located about 35 miles north of Chicago. Some of the work we performed was atypical to our normal scope of work. However, this type of work helps to secure and protect locations and also helps prevent potential harm in ‘people versus airplanes’ scenarios.

A set of yellow ‘pipe gates’, or manual swing gates, is shown in the image above. We supplied and installed them on both sides of an airport building. They help prevent unauthorized traffic from accidentally driving onto the air traffic side of the airport. The ‘before’ image below shows only traffic cones, or pylons, blocking the same lanes.

This type of gate is also commonly used in agricultural and residential settings. It is constructed from pipe materials, typically tubular steel for strength and durability. You often find it used along with pipe fencing.

The gates manually swing open and closed instead of using automated means. This allows easy access while providing a sturdy barrier but requires the human touch. Oftentimes you find them closed and secured with a chain and lock.

Other terms used to describe them are ‘farm gates’ or ‘irrigation gates’. They often add a decorative element to landscapes while maintaining functionality. These gates are valued for their durability, ease of use and versatility across various applications.
