This past fall ECI was called to a south side Chicago location where a sliding barrier gate had not been operational in several years. ECI replaced the obsolete equipment with a Nice/HySecurity SlideDriver™ 40 slide gate operator (green cabinet) and universal power source (UPS) backup (grey cabinet) as shown above. We also added the vehicle detector loops in the pavement as shown in the image below.
The old equipment we replaced was originally installed about twenty years ago. The cabinets were heavily rusted and connection points had corroded. (See images below.)
These SlideDriver™ slide gate operators are available in eight models that can move gates weighing from 1,500 to 20,000 pounds in speeds between one and three feet per second.
The newly installed model is one of two available with UPS and comes with a two-horsepower motor that accommodates gates weighing up to 4,000 pounds. Its gate cycle is at a rate of one foot per second. The accompanying direct current (DC) UPS provides up to 3,000 feet of backed-up gate travel after AC power loss.
Three auxiliary relays come standard with an option to add eight additional. The equipment carries a five-year warranty.
The vehicle detector loops sense traffic attempting to enter or exit the location. Upon sensing a car or truck approaching or leaving (and clearing the gate), a relay triggers the gate to open or close respectively.
External entrapment devices must always be installed to protect pedestrians from being caught between a gate edge and the anchor point or other fixed object at either the fully open or fully closed position. These can be photo-electric beams or edge guard contacts.
