On May 21, 2018 the West London News reported “Madame Tussauds wants to install bollards after it is identified as being at risk of a terror attack”. It seems the long lines which form outside the popular attraction mark it as a security risk and potential target for possible vehicular attacks by terrorists.
Madam Tussauds is, of course, a popular London wax museum with smaller locations scattered through America, Europe, Asia as well as Australia. Within its walls nearly 300 famous celebrities and historical figures are displayed in waxworks. It is a major London tourist attraction.
Living up to its theme and reputation, Madam Toussauds wants to add a creative twist to the perimeter security bollards to be installed to protect pedestrian traffic. They propose to add silhouettes of famous celebrities as a decorative flair and thus tie in with their overall theme.
Decorative Security Bollards To Mitigate Risk to Pedestrians
Every third bollard is to be covered in a black matte sleeve. It will feature a character or celebrity in a white silhouette. Can you picture Albert Einstein (above) on a security bollard?
The museum will try to reduce long lines in other ways to mitigate risk to pedestrians. They will encourage advanced ticket sales as well as indoor self service kiosks.
Madam Toussauds London spokesperson was quoted as saying: “In our continued commitment to providing a safe and secure environment, we have identified a further opportunity to implement additional enhancements. The application is part of our overall strategy to enhance the customer journey.”
As bollards increase in popularity as perimeter security measures against cars, vans and truck attacks, this idea does not seem to be totally outlandish. Rather it seems very reasonable. We will look for more innovative ways to make perimeter security bollards more aesthetically pleasing the environment in which they will rest.
The idea of installing decorative security bollards may, however, in itself cause additional crowds to gather and form an even more dangerous situation. We will have to monitor the results.
