BirminghamLive is the digital media outlet for the Birmingham Mall in England. The channel also reports news on the greater Midlands.
Just yesterday they reported a story about the nearby town of Solihull. New anti-terrorist gates and security bollards were installed at the two main entrances to High Street, the main arterial feed into the town center. The story is titled: “Anti-terrorism gates installed in Solihull town centre”.
At times the foot traffic is light in town center while at other times there is considerable traffic. There are mainly pedestrians walking in the area along with some baby carriages and electric scooters for the disabled. There is no vehicle traffic at all in the shopping area and I did not see any bicycles among the video clips.
There is an obvious danger from a terror attack using a vehicle driving though the area aiming at killing or injuring many residents and tourists. Several incidents were cited in the article including the vehicle attack using a car on Westminster Bridge in March 2017, as well as the June attacks at the London Bridge and also the one at the Finsbury Park Mosque.
Over $175,000 was spent in the increased security measures. Installation took about a year and was completed late in 2018. Other security measures within the city and airport are also being considered to counter terrorist threats.
According to Wikipedia Birmingham itself is “the second-most populous city in the United Kingdom, after London, and the most populous city in the English Midlands.” This area of England is called the midlands since it is in the middle of England and separates the north from the south areas. Solihull is a large town located just under eight miles southeast of Birmingham.
