Physical Perimeter Barrier

Security Magazine reported “Thwart Threats of Vehicle Terror Attacks” just yesterday, Memorial Day. The article referred to several attacks using cars or trucks, both intentional by terrorists as well as accidental, as we have also reported on.

Included were the terrorist attacks in a suburb of Toronto (Canada) in 2018 as well as the one here in the states in Lower Manhattan in 2017. The drunken driver who plowed into pedestrians in New Orleans in 2017 was also mentioned.

Regardless of the underlying cause, when vehicles and pedestrians both attempt to occupy the same space at the same time, it generally doesn’t work out well for the latter (people).

However, keep in mind as the article states: “Terrorists typically don’t go where they see barricades, so placing them wherever possible attacks can happen reduces security risks dramatically.” Counter terrorism efforts work when the proper equipment is applied correctly.

Securing Two Separate Vehicle Access Points

The article points out two different access points available to vehicles. A typical example is an area mainly used by pedestrians where service vehicles occasionally enter such as a market square.

Crash rated perimeter security bollards (and even wedge barriers) are an effective deterrent in these locations. The bollards and barriers may be fixed, operable, or can even be removable bollards.

Temporary access points is the second example where portable crash rated wedge barriers are an effective security measure. These access points may be streets and thoroughfares temporarily blocked off or closed for vehicle traffic such as during a parade or a marathon. Delivery trucks, police and fire vehicles or even ambulances in emergencies may still need access.
