New Zealand Islands

I read about a series of ram raids that occurred just a few days ago in New Zealand. It began with the initial article on January 21st posted on Stuff, the Waikato Times News website. They wrote “Spate of ram raids in Waikato with five shops hit, multiple cars stolen”.

The article details the times and locations of “…a trail of destruction across the district..” which started the day before. Different shops, a dairy (convenience store) and a liquor store were among those hit. Some of the locations had been hit prior, one at least twice prior in a few months. Police suspect that six stolen vehicles were tied to the crash and grabs.

Among items stolen were cash drawers, chocolate, a laptop and cigarettes. Extensive damage occurred to the entrances as well as the interiors. Some arrests were made but it was unclear as to whether those arrested were tied to the other crash and grabs.

A follow up human interest story was published “Hamilton dairy owner’s ‘distressing’ aftermath of a ram raid”. Included is a poignant video interview with the visibly upset owner as well pictures of the extensive damage. Click on the link to the article above to view. It may take the owner months to recuperate a loss of $30-40,000.

The incidents took place In the general area of Auckland which is in the north central portion of the northern island of New Zealand.
