Last year ECI was called to an existing client’s large office building on Wacker Drive in downtown Chicago. We had previously installed a vehicle wedge barrier some 10-12 years ago on a ramp leading to an underground parking garage used by building staff. The barrier was no longer repairable, having come to the end of its useful life.
We subsequently installed the Nice/HySecurity HydraWedge SM50 vehicle wedge barrier pictured above. On the left (red arrow) please note the entry card reader used by building personnel and an intercom mounted on a black gooseneck pole. Visitors signal a security guard inside the building who can manually release the wedge barrier via radio.
However, this was not the entire story of the wedge barrier replacement.
We fully understand the competitive nature of business today and were not taken aback when we discovered our client had gone for competitive bids. The problem our client was facing was the wedge barrier was no longer operational. The attempted repairs and bidding process had taken about 10 weeks. At the same time, the backlog for a replacement unit was six to eight weeks since the units are expensive and are not just sitting in storage somewhere.
Our Chuck Duda, sales team account executive, came up with a creative solution that helped solve the customer’s short term problem and also secured an agreement for the new wedge barrier installation. As a customer oriented individual, Chuck was more than happy to work with the client and the customer was equally as happy (if not more with the solution) for his suggestion.
Chuck’s short term solution was to lend the customer a barrier bar to provide temporary security protection until the new wedge barrier was manufactured and arrived. (See image to the left showing the temporary barrier bar installed just ahead of the old wedge barrier.) The client agreed to and did pay installation and removal fees.
